1. Stretch first. You would not think of going for a run without stretching and warming up first. However, most people dive right into their digging and spreading projects without giving their muscles an opportunity to warm up. This can lead to pulled or strained muscles.

2. Be smart when you lift. One of the leading causes of back and neck pain is incorrect lifting. If you have heavy bags of soil or mulch to lift, make sure to use your legs by bending at the knees, not at your back.

3. Don't do everything in one day. Taking frequent breaks and limiting the amount of work you do in a single day can help you prevent overusing muscles that are not used to exercise, as well as avoiding repetitive stress injuries.

4. Stay hydrated. The weather may still be cool, but you will still lose fluids by doing heavy work like digging and planting. Be sure to drink more water than you think you need to make sure that your muscles and joints stay well hydrated.
