Epley Maneuver For Vertigo

While the causes of vertigo are complex, the treatment can be simple. At Arlington Chiropractic Clinic, we evaluate a patient's vertigo, and if appropriate, perform the Epley Maneuver, along with other treatments for relief from vertigo and dizziness.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo and dizziness, especially among older people. One study showed that roughly one in 10 people over the age of 75 had the condition, which is caused by misplacement of the small stones or crystals of calcium carbonate in the inner ear. These stones stimulate the nerves of the inner ear, causing dizziness. Changes is head positions such as looking up or down, and getting out of bed or rolling over in bed are common triggers.

Known as the Epley Maneuver, this series of positions of the head, is the most widely used treatment of vertigo in the U.S., and it is typically performed by a physician in a medical setting.

A research study found that 95% of patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo had no further episodes of dizziness a week after beginning a simple and well-tolerated therapy regimen.
