What Is TMJ And What Causes It?

Temporomandibular joint disorder occurs when the joint connecting the jaw and the skull becomes swollen and irritated. This is actually a group of disorders, and as for cause, it varies. Sometimes it is due to injury, bite misalignment or persistent teeth-grinding. It can also be due to upper-cervical spinal misalignment. There isn't always an obvious explanation for the cause of TMJ. People often live with TMJ for years before seeking any kind of treatment. It often isn't until the pain and discomfort have worsened to the point where it is interfering with eating or talking before someone gets help.

People often underestimate the problems that TMJ can cause. Dental problems are a frequent result as well as headaches, neck pain and ringing in the ears. These symptoms stack up and make daily living uncomfortable. It's important to realize that what affects one part of the body affects another and that addressing one health problem can dramatically improve your quality of life.

What Are The Symptoms?

If you have TMJ, you may have any of the following symptoms. These include:

  • Clicking or popping in the jaw when chewing or yawning.
  • Pain in the jaw, especially when chewing.
  • Inability to open the mouth all the way without difficulty or pain.
  • Soreness in the jaw, tooth pain.
  • Tinnitus. Ringing in the ears may be persistent or occasional.

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, our chiropractors can help.
